This season, cutouts are the newest unapologetic, body-positive trend that I'm no stranger to:
This dress is McCall's 8175, #VanessaMcCalls. I cut view A/B.
My fabric is ZS1311P Print Scuba in Navy/Merlot from Zelouf Fabrics. I love the colors of this fabric and I love the drape. The first alteration I knew I had to make was a full bust adjustment. I don't like when a bodice like this has no shaping, so I added darts. This is what my FBA looks like.
I'd typically have to do a sway back adjustment. But since the back is open, There were other ways to refine the fit. I had to take the skirt in at the sides to make sure it sat at the natural waist. And I the bodice didn't fit as close to the body as I liked, so I added elastic to the edge.
This was an afterthought alteration. It's not the neatest... but it was so necessary for a good fit on me. And the bodice is fully-lined.I love this dress so much. The vibrant colors make me feel so happy and I know I'll enjoy wearing it.
You did a wonderful job. Did you do a muslin first to see where you needed to add the darts?
ReplyDeleteI just measure on the pattern pieces. Thanks!
DeleteScuba prints are so fun and vibrant but I've held back from using them for regular garments. This dress is fantastic <3 I'm holding back no more!
ReplyDeleteI treat it the same as I would a ponte. Thanks Michelle!
DeleteDid you do a tutorial of want kind on this?
ReplyDeleteI'm back again. Girl I love it here.
ReplyDeleteThat looks amazing! Thanks for the elastic tip. I'm hoping to refashion a linen dress into this and I think I will just go ahead and add elastic to the bodice and skirt, to mitigate the risk of it relaxing. (That seems like a more comfortable and easier to fit option than extra interfacing or stay tape.)
