I was working on Simplicity 1499 and I didn't like the instructions for the bias tape with mitered corners. I got a lot of experience working on Simplicity 1422, and I realized I'd never talked about the seam binding. So today, I'm sharing my method which I feel is the BEST and EASIEST way to get that great mitered corner.
What you need:
You can make your seam binding or you can buy prepackaged. For this instance, I'm using prepackaged.
I'm using my BERNINA #1 foot and my BERNINA #5 foot (it's my stitch in the ditch foot).
Steps:
I press one side of my seam binding open.I like to start in the middle. Notice that I folded the end down at a 45° angle.
Sew until ¼" from the end.
Keeping your needle in the down position, raise your presser foot and turn your project to 45° angle and stitch down into the point.
It should look like this when you're done.Fold the bias tape back over the stitched angle.
The fold it back over from the edge. It should look just like this. From the corner, sew all the way down to ¼" from edge and repeat previous steps. Do this all the way around.
When you get to the end, cut this side of the seam binding the same length as the 45° on the other end.
Now, let's turn it over...
Turn the end under so no raw ends will show from the back side.
Fold the corners down.
Secure with pins.
I use my stitch in the ditch foot here.
Press and it's all done!
Using Elmer's Washable school glue to hold your binding down works great and you can leave out the pins. You can use the liquid or stick glue. Place a bit on the edge, iron down in place and sew. The glue will come out once you wash the item. Check out glue basting binding in a Google search.
ReplyDeleteFabric glue stick is a part of my regular sewing notions: http://www.joann.com/clover-fabric-adhesive-stick/2002756.html?gclid=CjwKEAiA9s_BBRCL3ZKWsfblgS8SJACbST7D_4Ja4MBIysZfsM9OBINL6v8sdPgigFBIzNL-JjnVCRoCT8bw_wcB
DeleteI like the control of pins. Gluing, pinning, either would take about the same amount of time. Thanks for the tip.
Thanks Erica for this great tutorial....
ReplyDeleteThank you Aminat!
DeleteI'm just about to bind my first quilt and this is the first mitred corners tutorial that makes perfect sense to me. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteGlad it helps!
