Review: Vogue 1496 | The V-Neck Cocoon Dress!

12:00 AM

Have you ever made a garment and immediately wanted several more versions?  That's exactly how I feel about this dress.
This dress is Vogue 1496 by Sandra Betzina.  The description says: Very loose-fitting, tapered, pullover dress has V-neckline, optional pockets (stitched in place), front extending into yoke back, no shoulder seams, back armhole openings with narrow hem, and stitched hem
I cut the size E, view A minus the inset.  And it fit perfectly out of the envelope. This style is so of the moment.  And I've been seeing a lot of these little dresses lately.  Here's one from one of my favorite designers:
My fabric is the Nicole Miller Stretch Chiffon-In the Sun Multi from Joann.com.  First of all, let's back up... this is hardly chiffon.  Nor does it have ANYWHERE close to 10% spandex.  Somebody pulled that description out of their behind.  This fabric is a great polyester crepe de chine, with a slight amount of stretch.
Let's talk about the construction.  This dress goes together quickly.  It can be finished in a single sitting.  Well, it can for me.  The pockets on this dress are optional.  But who doesn't love a dress with pockets! The only thing I didn't like in the instructions was her suggestion of using Steam-a-Seam.
The pocket is sewn to the front of the dress.  You basically just need to hold the pocket in place while you edge stitch around it.
I used fabric glue around the edge of the pockets, sewed them on and kept it moving.
I really like the fabric I chose.  I think this print keeps the dress fun and casual.  I love that I can kick off my heels and throw on flat sandals to tone it down even more.  I can see this dress in black, white and a lightweight chambray.  I'd totally wear the chambray version with a pair of Chuck's or some Stan Smiths!
In case the v-neck is too deep for you and you don't want to use the inset or layer it over a cami, there are instructions on how to raise it included in the pattern.

  4. Nice choice of fabric for this pattern. I wondered when I looked at the technical drawing: is it wearable back to front as well or is the neckline too high in front then?

    1. No... It would look like a backwards dress! Plus, I made the pockets on mine. That would add to the ridiculousness! LO . thanks lin3arossa!

    1. The finish measurements are listed. I suggest measuring carefully. The armholes are inseam. You can adjust. Thanks nimsay831!

  13. This is so my style! Love the fabric you chose! Even though I just said I wasn't buying any more patterns for a while, I think I will make an exception for this one!

  14. Perfect print for the dress. I love it, I don't have pretty knees but I discovered I can wear this style a couple of inches longer and since it's longer to make it atractive I make a self/belt, it looks great. That's my advice for those of us with not the best legs.

  15. Hi there Erica,
I have to say, I love the patterned fabric, and that is amazing for me, as I tend to always wear plain colours!
The dress really gives out a fun vibe and I love the shoes you have put with the dress; great colour choices.

I am holding my breath as I am making a departure from tailored, structured clothes and making up, in patterned fabric Vogue 1482. Holding my breath to see how it works out!!

Oh, what will you be making next Erica??

  17. Bought this pattern yesterday when I saw it. It’s just the casual look I need for when it gets hotter than the hinges of hell around here. I think I’ll follow your advice and do it in chambray to wear with sneakers for running around, and maybe a dressier version for that (rare) dinner out. Question about the pockets though and Lord knows I need pockets. Whereas will my 5 yo keep his matchbox cars? Are they patch pockets just sewn to the outside of the dress? I thought so, but looking at your picture it looks like they’re being stitched on the wrong side of the dress? I’m sure the instructions will clear it up when it arrives.

    1. Roslyn, they're patch pockets sewn on the inside of the dress, but they create an inseam pocket. You just see the stitching on the outside front of the dress. I think yours would be awesome in chambray! Thanks!

  18. Love everything about this dress and how it highlights your killer stems. I looked at this fabric several times at Joann's and also scratched my head at the description. I'm truly holding back and not trying to race to Joann's so I can make an exact copy of this.

    1. That entire fabric collection was the best thing to happen to Joann in a long time. They have something for every fabric taste. You should definitely buy it! Thanks!

  21. Hi Erica! You look adorable!!! How do you decide between this one and V1482? https://voguepatterns.mccall.com/product-search?ref=1482

Do you think one is a better cut than the other. I am leaning towards Betzina's....

    1. I didn't. It was a really simple dress and I basically sewed it up as it was. For future reference, I'm really good at detailing ANY modifications I make to a pattern. Thanks Terry!
