Every now and then, I really become completely and utterly obsessed over a trendy piece. And this time, it's the fringed kimono jacket. I had been planning to make one for weeks now. I had even thought of drafting my own because they really are simple. And lo and behold, Simplicity released 1318. Jackpot!
The swingy, loose kimono jacket has become a warm weather layer staple -- often adorned with fringe or tassels are a great alternative to a blazer or cardigan.
Simplicity 1318 is a great capture of this trend. The pattern includes four variations from which to choose. I picked view C. It sews excellently straight from the envelope with no alterations necessary.
I chose a printed silk chiffon from my fabric stash.
Of course with silk, I used French seams.
And the only modification I made was to add my fringe, which I found in the home furnishing notion section at Hancock.
The fringe was really simple to attach. I finished off the hemline of the kimono just as the instructions suggested. I added the fringe with a zig-zag stitch on the back side.
And an edge stitch on the front.
And I really like the way it turned out.
This kimono will be a great addition to my wardrobe. I paired it with white skinny jeans. I plan to also throw it over my fuchsia romper, denim shorts, a little black dress, and in the fall -- my leather pants. It's a really versatile piece to own.
That is so gorgeous and classy.
ReplyDeleteThanks David!
DeleteErica....you are so on point!! I bought this pattern as well and would love to do what you did with the fringe. It doesn't look like the fringe is weighing the chiffon down. This is wonderful...thanks for all you do:) If you don't mind me asking what size did you cut???
ReplyDeleteSorry Lora, I forgot to add that info. I cut the size M. Thanks!
DeleteBeautiful! I'm right there with you on kimonos right now, particularly dreamy silk ones like this.
ReplyDeleteThansk Debbie!
DeleteSo simple so chic. Love it!
ReplyDeleteThanks Kelroc!
DeleteI love the scissors pendant!
ReplyDeleteThanks! I picked it up a while ago at Forever 21. They have scissors and clothing hangers!
DeleteKimonos are so in and you did hit the jackpot there.
ReplyDeleteThanks Faye!
DeleteI was thinking about getting this pattern and you just convinced me. What a lovely jacket.
ReplyDeleteYou should! Thanks Dk's Wife!
DeleteI see a kimono jacket in my future..... :)
ReplyDeleteIt would be a great addition! Thanks Rachel!
DeleteLovely kimono jacket.
ReplyDeleteThanks Cennetta!
DeleteJust gorgeous . I actually bought some fringe a few weeks ago for the same type of project. Nice to see such a classy version like yours vs all the cheapo mall ones. Great fabric really makes such a huge difference.
ReplyDeleteThanks Justine!
DeleteThis is just perfect! I snapped this pattern up, too, but have been waffling about what to make it up in. Silk charmeuse? Silk georgette? Turns out silk chiffon looks the best and will really work for warmer temps. What a versatile addition to your wardrobe!
ReplyDeleteThanks Amanda!
DeleteWhat a perfect cover up! It looks great on you!
ReplyDeleteThanks Carolyn!
DeleteI love it! It beautiful and you look gorgeous (as you always do).
ReplyDeleteOh, I do lub me a kimono! This looks effortless and easy and elegant on you. On my tubby little body I fear it would come off more as "1920s fringed lampshade." Do you know the Sewing Workshop pattern "Plaza Pants and Jacket"? That architectural little jacket might be an interesting make for you. I made one of raw, tussah silk and it has become the little, lightweight, warm throw that I pull out of the closet over and over, all year around.
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of that pattern line. Thanks so much for the recommendation Lynn!
DeleteI am attending a wedding in Punta Cana in February this would be great to take along to wear in the evening or make a beach cover version. Thanks for the great idea!
ReplyDeleteIt would be great! You should make something like this! Thanks Joen!
DeleteFierce, simply fierce Erica!
ReplyDeleteI like that "fierce" good adjective. I bought this pattern also and love your fringe addition. Once again you hit it out of the ballpark. So right...you will be able to pair this with lots of looks....Love it! Thanks for the reivew!
ReplyDeleteThanks Laurie!
DeleteGosh you look great. Great style as always but you seem taller (or slimmer?). Sorry I don't mean to be rude. I haven't been on your blog in a while so maybe..... Either way, I love the outfit and you wear it well.....
ReplyDeleteThanks Naan!
DeleteWow! So pretty! I love kimonos too and just made one out of silk jersey. Far from the usual silky fabric but I love it!
ReplyDeleteI bet that silk jersey is so delicious! Thanks Norie!
DeleteYou look amazing in this! I am going to have to get that pattern now. Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThanks Ann!
DeleteErica, I am looking and see that you obviously did not run into my problem! The back neck facing, #8 that connects to #7 stands up more like a collar than laying down as a back neck facing as shown with yours. Did you have any issues connecting this piece
DeleteI am making one as well, also in silk. I got a chainette fringe (apparel fringe) but I worry about laundering it. Wrinkles, go this way and that, or worse- unravel. Do you plan to handwash or dry clean yours?
ReplyDeleteIt is quite lovely by the way!
It's a very silk chiffon. It will go righ in the sink and onto a hanger to dry. Thanks Angie!
DeleteOh! WOw! Wow! Wow! Your Kimono and you look great and amazing!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI sew too, but I'm only amateur... :-)
CilaZzy from Hungary
Thanks CilaZzy!
DeleteI love it.
ReplyDeleteI love your Kimono! I think I will pick up this pattern as well.
ReplyDeleteThanks Levone!
DeleteWow! Love the kimono!
ReplyDeleteAfter seeing your delectable creation, you couldn't see me for the smoke as I raced to Joann's to score a copy of this pattern while the Simplicity pattern sale was still going on. Woo! Of course, it'll be hard to beat your utterly chic version -- you've definitely set the bar here. Creative Hormone Rush
ReplyDeleteI am working with same pattern -#1318! I have torn the front and back neck facing apart multiple times! No matter how I put it together, pattern piece # 8 when connected to 7 will not lay down as a back neck facing as yours did! It wants to stand up more as a collar, did you have any problems?
ReplyDeleteI didn't have a single problem. The construction went pretty quickly even with the French seams. Are you trimming down your seam allowance and clipping at the curves?
DeleteErica, this is beautiful! Since you were using a sheer silk, did you interface the neckline band? I'm worried about my interfacing showing through, but want the bands to have a little more structure.
ReplyDeleteTrisha, I did. I used a black interfacing. But when using a sheer you can always use silk organza as a sew in interfacing.
DeleteI also love this pattern and am sewing it from silk gauze. So glad you mentioned the organza as interfacing because I was trying to decide if I would use any interfacing at all. I have organza so will give it a try. Your kimono looks beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThank you! My daughter owns this now! And I need to make me another one!
