This is McCall's 6355. What I like most about this pattern is that it works for a knit or a woven. It has horizontal and vertical darts in the front and vertical darts in the back. I used the horizontal dart which gave the dress some shaping in the bust area. And it didn't distort the stripes of the fabric much.
I bought the fabric from Hancock. What I didn't notice until I got to the cutting table is that the stripes run on the grain, instead of selvage to selvage. Minor irritation. Since this jersey is 100% cotton, I didn't have to worry about it stretching one way or the other. I bought enough to ensure that my garment would have horizontal stripes. I added an inch or so to the length. But other than that, this sewed straight from the envelope.
This is how I finished the neckline.
I was going for a nautical look. I've been seeing that style so frequently from J. Crew and I wanted to put something together that was similar. I even found a nautical-inspired rope necklace!
Wearing: denim jacket: Per Se Collection; dress: McCall's 6355; purse: Jason Wu for Target; pumps: Tahari slingback espadrille pumps; belt: The Limited (old, but similar to this one); necklace: Charming Charlie.
Cute dress!!! Love it. I wish we had a Hancock. Only Jo Ann fabric in Pittsburgh!

DeleteGreat dress and lovely overall outfit! I love your shoes, too. I have that pattern and some striped fabric ready to be dusted off.
ReplyDeletethanks Jenny!
DeleteThat stripe thing is weird. I've seen dresses like this in retail, but without the darts, and they make you look like you're wearing a tent if you're busty like me. I just bought a mariner stripe shirt. Still on a quest for the perfect white jean. I thought the low rise trend was over. Apparently not so much. This dress is too cute. I think I might pick up this pattern for an easy summer dress.
ReplyDeleteRoslyn, you should try a pair of Not Your Daughter's Jeans. They'll be the best jeans you've ever owned and well worth their price. Thanks!
DeleteVery pretty dress, another pattern to get.
ReplyDeleteThanks Lori!
DeleteLove the outfit! I will put this pattern on my list to buy!

ReplyDeleteTOO cute! I just finished the sleeveless version in a green knit from Joann's (I'm still getting my sewing skills together). You definitely make me want to try a stripe (not brave enough yet...the matching might drive me mad). Your dress is so perfect for spring/summer fun though...maybe I'll try it after all. :)

DeleteNice to see this done up. I've had this for awhile as a good "basic" I got nice knit fabric from Mood so I think I may just pull this out. You got the J-Crew happn'n!
ReplyDeleteThanks Carol!
DeleteSuch a classic dress! That's a really great pattern. I love the dart shaping...could see this in a woven as a little floral sheath, too.
ReplyDeleteIt looks great on you, Erica!
Thanks Lynneb!
DeleteLove this dress, especially in the stripes!
