How a CHANEL Jacket is made!
3:45 PM
When you see the price tag for a Chanel jacket and thought it to be ridiculous, you should watch this video. I've made a "Chanel-like" jacket with all of the handsewn couture elements. And it was definitely a labor intensive project. (Hence the fact that I've not made another!) The Haute Couture house's process is incredibly mesmerizing! Take a look!

ReplyDeleteI love that you posted this. I remember learning that you're not just paying for the prestige of the name but the expertise of craftsmanship. The designers do great work but its the workers that really use their magic.
ReplyDeleteThis is true! Karl comes up with the sketch. But it's those amazing pattern makers and seamstresses that make it happen.
ReplyDeleteTailoring and Couture were mandatory courses for my degree. We used only the traditional methods. I made a jacket in one of those classes and the fit like a dream.
ReplyDeleteI am now in need of another jacket and though I love the fit I don't see myself spending that much time to make another and it's not that I would not ever want do it again, it's just very time consuming.
And it was in these classes that I learned the difference between couture and high end ready-to-wear
I've made quite a few tailored jackets and those are projects I like to do when I don't want to think about what I'm sewing. Sometimes I need a slow project.
ReplyDeleteErica thanx...
ReplyDeleteWelcome!
ReplyDeleteThat was beautiful! The music added so much to it. I'm going to show this to my little future fashion designer. Thanks for the link.
ReplyDeleteGreat video - thanks for sharing it with us :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing the link. One of these days I'll be ready for a slow project and will make a Chanel Jacket. I would like to do it, once anyway.
ReplyDeleteMy next one will be sewn a lot easier than the first. I'm not willing to do all of that handsewing. I have the experience under my belt and that's good enough for me.
ReplyDeleteI took a 4-day class with Susan Khalje in 2009 and one of the ladies in th class worked on a channel jacket, of course she was unable to finish the jacket in four days of sewing from 9am - 5pm. The amount of hand work that went into the jacket before the jacket was sewn was tremendous. So I know how much work goes into creating a Channel jacket. The video is great. Thanks for posting.
ReplyDeleteWow, beautiful. Makes you realize what an art it really is. Thanks so much for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThey really are impeccably made, I think it's time I made another!
ReplyDeleteOne day I'll make something like this. When I will have enough skills.
ReplyDeleteThank you for posting this video!
Wow! I've wanted to tackle this style jacket for several years. I'm intimidated, I won't lie. :-)
ReplyDeleteWow great video! Although I suspect what might really be happening is that they are making a sample for Chanel Boutique RTW factory production. The use of those two industrial machines tips me off to that, especially the 2nd mahine that is making buttonholes. If this was being made for a cusotmer in the haute couture side of the house there would be much more hand sewing. Still it's amazing to see it come together and the finished jacket is gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteThanks for this post. I have saved the Threads article with hopes of creating a jacket too. I even went to Chanel in NYC just to get a look and the workmanship was incredible! Of course my husband was horrified at the price tag because he had know idea - he even started backing up when I showed him the price tag.LOL
ReplyDeleteWow, great video Erica...thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteYes Phyllis, This is Boutique RTW Factory production. The industrial machines, the use of fusible tape, and machined buttonholes are the big tip-offs.
But hey, the production work is still outstanding, and the finished jacket beautiful! And regardless, Couture or RTW Boutique...I still will never be able to afford either one ;)
Thanks for sharing. A couture chanel like jacket is on my project list for this year.
ReplyDeleteThank You Erica
ReplyDeleteGreat video.
ReplyDeleteI decided to make a Chanel knock off for my final in one of my advance pattern classes a few quarters back.
Oh, and I decided to make it for my plus-size mother who lives in another state!
Worse thing I ever done on my life!
NEVER.AGAIN.
I got an "A" in the class and for the project, but I'm pretty sure I had an ulcer or two at the end.
Thank you so much for sharing this video! I absolutely adore this specific jacket and keep it as inspiration and motivation for my pending Chanel jacket project. I see that they didn't quilt this jacket, nor did they fuse anything other than the hems and neckline. This is very interesting. I think my boucle fabric could benefit from some stabilizer in the curved seams at the very least.
ReplyDeleteWow! No idea it took this much work. Though I admire the craftsmanship, the thought of spending that much money on a jacket still makes me a little faint.lol
ReplyDeleteP.S. I'd love it if you checked out the Tiffany & Co. giveaway on my blog!
