Review: McCall's 6436 | Button front shirt

Date Night Look!

This is McCall's 6436, view D.  The description says: Loose fitting, front and back darts and front band. View D: Collar, collar band and pleated two piece sleeve.
The most awesome thing about this pattern is that it's sized based on bra cup size.  I used the size 14 and the D cup.  Ladies, you know what that means, don't you?  No FBAs!  And it has horizontal bust darts that I prefer.
I didn't have to lengthen because I made this shirt with the intention of wearing it tucked with this high-waist skirt.  And when I wear it with pants, it'll be untucked.  I found this fabric at Hancock.  It's a pink and black gingham shantung.  It's a poly, but I think it's great.  I'm not even a pink kinda girl, but this fabric called out to me.
And I also found the sleeves to be the right length even though I'm wearing them rolled up.  Notice that I used a black silk dupioni for the cuffs.  This was unintentional.  I didn't buy enough fabric to allow for matching the pattern and ran out.  When I returned to the store, of course it was no where to be found.  There was no way I was scrapping this project, so I just went with black.  It was a "Tim Gunn/Make it work!" moment.  I didn't use the instructions at all, so I can't tell you anything about them.  I've made quite a few button front shirts, so I just went for it.
Wearing:  skirt: ASOS; shoes: Steve Madden; bag: Urban Expressions; Belt: Calvin Klein (old); Cape: Vogue 2924

  21. I have been following your blog silently for a while now. Today, when at my local fabric store I was browsing tough the newest Vogue Patterns magazine, I saw our article. Of course I had to buy it, which I haven't done for years.

Thanks for your great looks and the inspiration that they bring. (I really loved your take on animal print from Jan 7th).

  29. That is so cute, I can't stand it! And it comes alive when you wear it, because it didn't make its statement on the dressform - when I saw it on you, it spoke up!

  30. Ahh, yes! A pattern I love and didn't know about. This is why I love your blog!! I love patterns with cup sizes (I, too, cut a 14, D cup) and I grab them whenever I see one. It's strange how the pattern companies don't make it easier to find them, at least in the online catalogs. Now if only I had the courage to match plaids. :) Your outfit looks fantastic. Thank you for sharing!!!

  32. As a new sewer, I just googled FBA, FBA pattern, clothing FBA, but got no results. I've since then found the answer. I didn't know to use sewing FBA, just FYI. It was good for me to find out, though, because I am an FBA girl as it turns out- no patterns fit me right and I actually figured it out on my own before reading about it. As a newbie, imagine my confusion when my pattern sizes ran all across the defined pattern.

  33. You look like a million dollars!

  34. GoneferalinID, if you feel that you should be doing a FBA, you should look into the book "Fit For Real People". I highly recommend it.

    Thanks Patti!

  35. I've been meaning to try this pattern myself.

Question 1: When choosing the size, do you go by your full bust measurement or the upper bust measurement? How does having a variety of cup sizes affect size decisions?

    ReplyDelete
  36. You pick your size as you would with any other shirt/blouse pattern. And where I would have normally done a FBA, I picked the cup size instead.

  37. O.K. Learning here. Thank you.
