Review: Vogue 8776 | Camel Cape
1:30 PM
I have been lusting for some camel-colored outerwear since last year. I've had this piece of fabric in my stash since Summer 2010!
I first fell in love with this cape design when it came down the Giambattista Valli Fall 2010 runway. And then I saw it worn by Fatima Siad in an editorial in the July 2010 issue of Marie Claire. I immediately ripped out the page and pinned it to my corkboard to occasionally daydream about and drool over!
Not to mention her hair is extraordinarily amazing!
And the black version was also worn by Victoria Beckham.
Vogue 8776 is not a perfect knock-off, but it really does a great job of capturing the silhouette of the original.
I used 100% wool melton coating and the cape is left unlined. There are 3 length options and I used version B. I cut the size large. I probably could have done the medium, but I wanted to make sure I'd be able to raise my arms with the unique "sleeves". There were no fit issues for me, so this baby sewed perfectly straight out of the envelope. Anytime I can do that, that's "Grade A+" pattern for me!
I really, really wanted a similar look to the original, so instead of buttons I used covered snaps.** I've been looking at other garments with covered snaps and apparently I didn't follow the rule on which side the male and female parts should go on. Oh well, what's done is done. I'll know next time.
**Note: If you decided to eliminate buttons as I did, you have to make sure to skip instructions 3, 9, 16, etc... Basically any where near the center front where you see the 2 small circles where you're instructed to reinforce and clip. These create inseam buttonholes.
The Vogue cape has inseam pockets. I wish the pattern had made provisions for a wide welt pocket like the original. And why are the pockets on these pattern never deep enough? You need room to shove your gloves in!
Here's the back...
and how it looks open.
And the gratuitous shoe shot!
These are Sam Edelman 'Lyla' Pumps. I bought them from my favorite local shoe boutique Gus Mayer.

Even though my knee hurts like hell, I'm going to have to limp over to JoAnns and pick up this pattern. I love it! It looks fantastic on you. Love the shoes too.
ReplyDeleteWhat an amazing cape! Looks great on you :)
ReplyDeleteI'm jealous, jealous, jealous. this is the second awesome version of this that I've seen. I have had this pattern burning a hole in my stash for a couple of months (along with some large snaps- I like your thinking!) I still haven't sourced any fabric yet. Argh.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for the inspiration, and the tips on sewing the pattern with snaps. You really do look fabulous in this cape.
What an interesting silhouette for a cape. I like that it is sleek looking. You did a beautiful job putting it together! The whole outfit rocks.
ReplyDeleteWhere do you get the time? You always look so classy and gorgeous and this coat is no exception!
ReplyDeleteYou look absolutely gorgeous,
ReplyDeletethe cape, the shoes...everything
Ohh.., Love, love your cape.
ReplyDeleteI love this cape. I've got the fabric for a cape but didn't have a pattern - now I do, thanks to your review. Thank you for posting.
ReplyDeleteLove this cape and the fabric choice is wonderful.
ReplyDeleteJust wanted to add: your eyebrows are so perfect I can't stand it. ;)
ReplyDeleteLooks GREAT! I have this in my stash, just not sure when I am going to get to it...in time I know.
ReplyDeleteThanks Ladies!
ReplyDeleteI love the coat, but I had to spend quality time olgling the shoes...
ReplyDeleteFantastic outfit...
ReplyDelete"Git it Gurl!". You are looking FIERCE. Seriously, you are rockin' this look. I have been feeling the camel color for a while now also, but don't have anything nearly as fabulous as your fabric you used to make your cape.
ReplyDeleteThis is such a fabulous coat, it looks as good as the branded originals! You sew wonderfully, everything looks branded and store bought in this blog! And I love your styling!
ReplyDeleteWow I'm impressed by your talent. Every item you make really looks as if it was from an expensive store. This Vogue pattern is really great. It's a shame that they are so expensive and hard to get in Germany.
ReplyDeleteGreat job, Erica. I wish I lived in a climate where I could not have my arms covered up when I'm outside...
ReplyDeleteImpressively gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteI Love your cape! It's really unique!
ReplyDeleteThanks!
ReplyDeleteThe cape is beautiful. Your shoes are kicking!
ReplyDeleteThanks Regina! I love those shoes!
ReplyDeleteWhere can I get this pattern. It is hot.
DeleteI love your cape. I'm a beginning sewer. Do you think I can tackle it?
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I love the direction your blog is going.
Christine, I don't see why not. Just go slow and take your time with topstitching. And when you have to hand sew, get comfy and make nice, precise and invisible slipstitches.
ReplyDeleteThanks! Every so often I have to update the format to keep from getting bored with blogging.
Very pretty! I share your love of camel outerwear, and this is spectacular.
ReplyDeleteGreat cape & color..... love the high collar.
ReplyDeleteLOVE IT!!! Cut, color...It's perfect:)
ReplyDeleteThis is one of my favorites. LOVE THE CAPE. The shoes are fab. Do it Diva!
ReplyDeleteOh this is just fabulous, you are going to get paparazzi following you around soon.
ReplyDeleteThanks Allison!

ReplyDeleteYour style is amazing!
ReplyDeleteSo do you! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI meant to comment days ago. I love this cape / coat. I've been wanting camel colored outerwear this season too. Love the style. You have a great eye for matching these runway looks.
ReplyDeleteThanks and Happy Holidays!
ReplyDeleteHi Erica! Looking gorgeous :) I follow your board on Pinterest.
ReplyDeleteWould you mind telling me where are the sunglasses from?
Thanks danysedai. I wish I could tell you, but I don't even remember. Those glasses are over 5 years old.
ReplyDeleteI just googled this pattern since I am planning my own version - your take on it is AMAZING! Really beautifully made. I want to do a short hair faux fur in leopard - do you think the pattern would be possible? Thinking about black bias tape at all the seams...
ReplyDeleteHi Heather,
ReplyDeleteI don't know how short is "short". But with that under bust seam line, I don't think this particular cape would work any shorter that View A of the pattern.
Thanks!
Erica, I did it! And it turned out better than my wildest imaginings! Thanks again for the inspiration! http://closetcasefiles.blogspot.ca/2012/10/tripping-world-capetastic.html
ReplyDeleteCongratulations Heather!
